Just recently my 32 has started making a noise when I either coast or push in the clutch. The noise sounds almost like gears barely touching each other. It is a metallic regularly spaced sound. I put the car on my lift and ran it while using a stethoscope to isolate the noise. The noise seems loudest around the universal housing and transmits back to the differential. The noise seems lower all around the transmission. The tranny was down about 1 quart of lube too but the rear was not overflowing, not too worried about that right now.

I looked at the universal and everything looks good. Should the driveshaft yoke bushings move freely back and forth on their posts? When I first opened it up I thought I found the problem because I could move the shaft up and down but it looks like it was meant to do that ??

Anyone have any idea? Free wheeling is disconnected and throwout bearing is good.

Chris

A suggestion was made to disconnect the driveshaft and run it ti isolate if it is from the transmission or past it. I will give that a try/.

The transmission holds 2-1/2 pts of lube so you only had a half pint left and the freewheeling unit which holds 3/4 of a pint may have been out also as it might have drained into the main case. When you refill the tranny you should fill the freewheeling unit separately even though it will flow back and forth thru the bearing though slowly due to the heavy oil and the close tolerances of the bearing. I would fill with oil and then test drive before taking anything apart.

I did fill and run it and the noise is still there. I did not realize there was a seperate fill for the free wheeling. I will try to add fill to the unit,

In answer to the second part of your post -yes- the yoke should move side to side on the trunnions. While the service book states the freewheeling capacity as 3/4 of a pint normal fill after draining is usually about 4 ounces. I would not put more than that and after running recheck the main case level. There is no way to check the freewheeling level. Getting that thru the small opening in the housing is a pain. Is your freewheeling unit operational or locked out?
