h how can I tell if this 51 car speedometer is any good or good only for parts? thank you jerry whitfield Winston salem NC

I put a shortened pencil in the drill and drive the speedometer with the eraser end. If you can get a constant speed going, then you can observe the miles traveled over a few minutes, figure out the miles per hour represented by that speed and see if the pointer matches that.
My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

The drill idea sounds like a good one. Once you determine if it's kerplatz or not, check your speed against those digital "Your Speed Is.." signs on the roads for accuracy. Mine reads 3 mph high so it's my anti-ticket device now. Good luck.
