hi did Chevrolet Division make a 4 door car that had wood sides a nd rear, 1941-48? Even if they did, I was not able to conclude if this was real or fake. I don't know if I will be able to post a picture or not. If you want to see a picture of it, email me at jerrybev1@yahoo.com thanks for your information jerry whitfield
Chevrolet did indeed market a wooded side Station Wagon in those years. I believe the first year was 1939 and last was 1948. See the following: http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/i/ionia/ionia.htm for more information on GM bodied station wagons and a surprise later in the article. One of the frequent contributors in Chat should be able to add to this from his personal experience.
I have some direct knowledge on the later as the company I retired from was involved in the production process.
chipper is correct. '39 was first year chevy sold a wooden bodied station wagon. chevy sent 4 door sedans to the various woody wagon body builders, the roof from about 6" reward of windshield top was cut and the floor pan was cut just to the rear of where the feet of passengers in the 4 door sedan were located. the 4 steel doors were removed along with the roof/rear floor pan and rear fenders were discarded. the wooden framing was then built around this bisected 4 door sedan. Wood Framing is ash on our 39 deluxe woody, birch on the paneling. front seat was utilized from the 4 door donor. the second and third row seats were custom made by the body builder. all the 800 plus 39 chevy woodies had a welled right front fender and the two pieces of the right half of the hood was hinged to allow for opening of the right sided hood without making contact with the spare tire in the right front fender. about 1/2 of the 800+ 39 Chevys were standard and the other half were master deluxe. mike mccagh
I don't believe Chevy or any other GM division sent completed 4-door sedans to be converted to woodies. Chevy at least, offered a passenger car chassis with floor, cowl, A-pillars, windshield, and front sheet metal attached that were then bodied by an outside source.
