My ”˜41 special deluxe is surging. It is most noticeable above 40 mph, and is almost constant. It has a new valve job, all plugs are firing, and the carburetor is freshly rebuilt. Any thoughts? Thanks, Sid

Did you clean or change the fuel filter ?

Most common cause of surging as described is timing advanced too far or lean fuel mixture. That can be caused by a a vaccuum leak or lean condition in carburetor settings. Leak could be cracked insulator under carburetor, intake manifold to head leak or some vacuum hose leak like for wipers or vacuum shift.

Had a similar problem with a '64 Plymouth when I was a teenager. The problem was a loose distributor clamp. Tightened it down and the surging disappeared.

We checked for leaks and found none. Changed the fuel filter, and the old one still looked good. Retarded the timing a few degrees, and that made the difference. Surging is gone. Thanks guys. Sid
