our '40 three-speed transmission will require a rebuild soon...are all parts, except case & cover, available through vendors or should we be stockpiling parts from ebay & swaps?..

thanks,

doubt you'll need more than synchronizers. you'll need to tear it apart before buying parts you may not need. mike

mike,

thanks...just didn't want to miss any ebay items that we might need and couldn't just buy off some vendor's shelf...

rebuilt my m22 rock-crusher thirty years ago...afraid that was my last experience rebuilding manual transmissions...

right now, our '40 occasionally pops out of third when slack (no load)...is the shifter interlock responsible for this function?..

also, the shop manual refers to our transmission as having carburized gears...was that a hardening treatment?..

thanks...as mike suggests, when we get it torn down and know what we need, we'll get in touch with you...

Most likely the main drive gear and input shaft are worn. If the pilot bushing gets worn then the input shaft can move. When it moves up and down it can force the main drive gear out of the back of the input shaft. It also rounds the meshing teeth a little which helps to dissengage the gears.
