Asking if anyone has rebuilt this engine before. The main bearings look like brass inserts. Do I need to have the covered in Babbitt or are they true insert bearings? If they are regular insert bearings does anyone have a Part number for the mains?

I'm no expert but I don't think 30 Engines had insert bearings.

no inserts they are Babbit, poured and lined to the crank

On my 1929 the main bearings in the block are separate and not poured into place. The shells are brass with babbitt lining. You might find old stock replacements as I did but mine were standard size and I had to have the crank built up and ground to original size to use them. The Filling Station offers a service where you send in your original bearing shells and they are re-babbitted but once installed they will need to be align bored to whatever size you have your crank mains re-ground to. The connecting rods are poured in place.

One cautionary tale about using NOS babbitt main bearings.
A friend of mine had his 1933 Chevy engine rebuilt many years ago and found supposedly NOS main bearings for that rebuild. The engine work was done by a noted local expert mechanic and fellow VCCA member.
Not too long after getting the car back on the road, it developed a horrendous oil leak from the bottom end. He pulled the engine out and found that the babbitt in the 'new' bearing shells was disintegrating. He suspects that these shells were not manufactured correctly and had to buy another set of 'new' bearing shells.

Thank you all. That's what I thought. I need to take my brass shells and have Babbitt lined put on them.

Call Russ @pauls rod and bearing. Very first rate service and quick turnaround. You can also send him your block and he will pour the mains and bore them I believe. Sending a stripped block freight is not expensive as some would like to make you think. I’m willing to bet the work would get done a whole lot faster than if you send it to a machine shop specializing in Babbitt work and a ton cheaper!

The work from Paul's is always beautiful. It looks so good, you hate to put it inside your engine and cover it up where no one can see it. I believe I have some NOS mains for these engines. I was not aware of quality issues. They are standard size, but would be excellent cores.
