Gene,

If you say they were glass, then glass they be. It makes no difference what the others say. I'm sticking with you on this. Agrin

In 1941 and 1942 some Chevrolet cars has glass and some Lucite lenses. They tended to discolor or cloud-up.
Lucite or plastic would have been mkorescarce during WwII than glass. The firstswitch to plastic was in 1955.
1948 cars switched to Lucite for better lightt transfer. After that all tail light lenses were Lucite.

I know the difference between glass and plastic, all the 46 front lenses I have seen (and I have seen quite a few) are plastic , maybe you can show me a glass front parking light lense for a 46 Chev? looking to buy a pair of glass lenses :)

I notice that Mel's response post was a reply to me rather than Gene.

For the record: I don't have a clue as to what the 1946 parking light lenses were made. Gene is almost always right and I was counting on him being right on this, seemingly relatively simple, issue also.

I can't make the claim based on my own knowledge. I just plumb don't know. I was just riding Gene's coattails.

Thus, there may be more to be gained by directing your challenge at Gene rather than me. dance

I have a couple of 42 lenses and I think they are glass but that doesn't count for anything. Agrin

Only because they (42s) were the last ones before the 1946 and may imply/infer that maybe the next regular production year (46) may have followed suit with glass.

With the Second World War thrown into the mix, that is a reach, I know, but that was my intent, anyway.

Sorry for any confusion that such a reference may have caused.:dance

Two items about this thread. First, I just drove out to a farm where this '46 has been sitting for 40 plus years that I know of.[Linked Image from pic100.picturetrail.com]

Their is no doubt in my mind these are original parking light lens. They are just like Mel described, plastic. If you look closely they have the same numbers too.

Now second, Not all '48's have plastic tail light lens. The Fleetline 4 doors have glass.

That's my take on these two subjects!

The early 1948 had glass tail light lenses. The late had Lucite lenses EXCEPT for the Fleetline 4 door. Fleetline 2 door lenses are the same as regular body styles.

Evidently both glass and plastic were used in 1946. I have a NOS parking light with glass lens.
