Hi, i think my ignition lock is broken as i´m able to switch the lock w/o a key and i can pull the key (if used) in each position. Could someone help me to identify my Ignition lock & switch with the attached pictures? I´m not sure if this is the orginal one, my guess would be a 49-50 bel air/fleetline switch... Do i have to replace the lock and switch or can i just replace the lock? How can i remove the lock from the switch?

What you show is the "unlocked" on/off positions. If you use the key you can turn the switch one more 'click' to the left. Remove the key and it is locked.

You don't need to remove the lock?

It is for the '49-'50 Chevy . And correct, locked is in the vertical or center position.

On the 1948-1952 ignition switch lock is all the way counter clock wise. "On" is in the center (straight up and down) and unlocked but remove the key and can be turned on with no key is all the way clockwise. To get it in the locked position you need the CORRECT key.
See owners manual for 1948.

Yep, that is pretty much how I described it. Same for 1949-50.

Hi, just checked this at my lock. It seems i´ve the wrong key as i´m not able to move the switch counterclockwise to the locked position. As i live in Germany what is the easier way, to find someone to make the correct key for me or would be a replacement of the lock with a new key a simpler solution to solve this?

I didn´t found a 48` lock, would a lock from 49 also fit in my ignition switch? I found this one at ebay:

1949-1966 Chevrolet Ignition Switch Key Lock Cylinder w/ Original GM Style Keys

To remove the lock, would be the following process correct?

1. Switch clockwise to OFF
2. Use a pin through the hole to push the spring pin back
3. Turn the lock a little bit more clockwise to loose the lock
4. Pull the lock off

Thanks in advance to all for your help.

Hate to tell you, but, if you don't have a working key, you can't remove the cylinder. I could be wrong!

Do you have a key that fits the door lock, glove box lock or the trunk lock? In '48 one key would work all locks and ignition switch. At least on a U. S. made car.

My key fits for my glove box lock but unfortunately not for the locked off position. I will try to remove the lock in the next days, could someone help me how to remove the lock and if the linked lock in my last reply fit to my lock switch?

You did not say if the key you have fits the door or trunk lock.

Try spraying inside the lock cylinder with penetrating oil. Wait a little time. Then try again with the key. Push, pull and twist while applying slight pressure counter clock wise. Their may be some corrosion build-up from not being used.

I have no idea if the Ebay lock would work.
