hello everyone,
I had to take off the head of my 216, so before removing the head I took off the intake/exhaust manifold. Once I finish the work on the head I reassembled everything, and installed the manifold with a new gasket. I made sure that the old gasket did not have any shims, (which it didn't), tightened the manifold bolts from the center of the manifold out, but now it leaks air to the point where I can't get the engine to idle well. What should I do? I was told that there are copper gaskets out there that seal better than the fabric/metal one I got at NAPA. Is there manifold gaskets out there that are thicker? what about some type of manifold super goop sealer?
Any help would be appreciated! P.S. yes, I still enjoy working on the car.

Hi Steve, Take a look at this discussion on manifolds. Manifold Fitting Check entry #4 for a tip.

Hello Antique Mechanic,
Before posting my question today, I had done a search in the VCCA website and looked at the posting that you have suggested. But still would like to know if there is a copper gasket, or thicker gasket that I could use.
Thanks!

Hi Steve, I am not aware of anything but the "stock" gasket for your application. I feel that the gasket is not the problem, but the fit of the manifolds/rings to the head. If the exhaust manifold has warped any as a result of overheating then "decking"/"plaining" is a must for a satisfactory fit.

if you don't want to take the manifold to a machine shop you could try permatex copper coat.. i think thats whats it's called. copper high temp silicone stuff, i used it on a set of fenton exhaust manifolds that wouldn't seal. it worked great and hasn't blown out since i did it over 5 years ago on a 53 235.
