Hey guys, I was wondering, My 35 has the big opening in the roof. Is that nailed or screwed to the wood framework? If nailed, do I use a ribbed nail or just a regular nail. The holes aren't that big so I know it wouldn't be a heavy nail. Thanks for the help.

Originally the fabric to cover the top opening was nailed to the wood frame. Common (straight shank) nails used. Many now use ring shank nails but if you do don't plan to remove any of them like you can do with the common nails.

The steel trim had nails welded in it to anchor the trim to the wood.

I have the steel trim. I think the nails from that go into the oval slots in the metal roof. Does anything go between the metal and the wood roof frame to seal it?

The black vinyl fabric and sealant. There was a metal mesh screen in the center for the radio antenna, then a burlap or fiber support and a cotton or fabric tufting for filler and to provide a smooth appearance. Other guys can chime in on their experience with the top material lay up.

Thanks for the info regarding how the steel trim is attached- I was wondering how it was all put together.
Previous owner of our unrestored '35 Coach covered the roof fabric with a generous coat of aluminum roof coating and extended it over the steel trim onto the roof metal.
I'm in the process of cleaning off the steel trim and the sheet metal and leveling the blisters in the aluminum as much as possible; then will re-seal the steel trim and coat the fabric with black satin Rustoleum.
If we keep this car long enough, I will eventually replace the roof covering

Any other wisdom out there on this process?
