I need 12v to turn my starter, due to weak or dragging starter, with a 6v ceramic resistor to the coil. I know none of the other system, lights, etc. will not work this way, but what is wrong with the cranking and ignition system being this way??????

It would de dust to fix it to to start on 6 volts. It should be much easier than converting the whole system to 12 volts.

To get the car started initially and to locate the 6 volt issue, you can use an isolated 12 volt battery for the starter and a 6 volt battery for the coil and the rest of the ignition/electrical system.

You are just complicating the problem. Spend your time and money correcting anything that is wrong with the 6-volt system. They worked well when new on 6-volt and will do so now even better with our superior parts to what was available when new.

You will be pleased with yourself when it is all corrected.

I agree with AntiqueMechanic! You are so much better off keeping it 6 volts all the way. I have driven my 1950 Chevrolets thousands of miles with 6 volt systems. From 1971 until 1977 my 1950 Styleline Deluxe 4 door sedan was my only car and of necessity, a daily driver. City driving, yes. 1,200 mile trips, yes. Fuel pump problems, yes. Carburetor problems (bad gas), yes. Timing gear, yes. Starter? No problems. Get good life out of 6 volt Optima batteries.

If the 6 volt starter is weak or is dragging on the pole shoes as you have indicated above, you need to pull the starter and have it rebuilt.

I agree with the above. And put a 6 volt in it.
