I'm in the process of switching my car from positive ground to negative. My regulator clearly says "2110 6v pos". That's pretty cut and dry, so I order a replacement. My replacement regulator says "1114 6v neg/pos mc8". I see no difference between the two, nor do I find any way (visually or in instructions) to switch from neg to pos or back.
Any thoughts? Did I needlessly replace?

You would need to get the specifications and schematic for the 1114 regulator in your hands and compare it to the original Delco Remy 1118309 regulator or superceded versions.
They may be compatible but you will need to check. I would think that if it's suitable for both positive or negative ground then the case is likely "floating" and not part of the circuits as it would be with a stock regulator. This would mean you may have to wire differently or at least add a ground wire since it won't be getting ground through the metal regulator case. You will need to see a schematic for this regulatorand compare to stock.
I had to hunt to find the 1118309 regulator for my 1938 and I recall there were not many options that were a direct replacement, at least on paper.

Most all new repro regulators are designed to polarize pos. or neg. where as the originals were not.

Thanks everyone. I went ahead and replaced it and everything seems to be fine. No mystery discharge. We are out of town for a month, so will see when we return.
