Please educate me here. There is steel. There is cast iron. And there is cast steel, I thought that cast iron had to be poured in a mold. That steel could be hammered and shaped by heating and pressure shaping, Now we have cast steel. So, I assume that steel can be poured into a mold and the shape determined by a mold just as cast iron. Do I have all this correct? Best, Charlie

I always assumed cast anything would be brittle, not what you want for a front axle. I didn't even know there was such a thing as cast steel until this thread prompted me to look it up. I always thought the front axles were drop forged steel. I couldn't find anything is my specs that say one way or the other.

Stepping a bit beyond my bounds but....cast steel can be cast in a mold but it's much more difficult to do than cast iron...more shrinkage, higher temperatures required....Billu38

On page 69 of the 1938 shop manual, the front axle is described as being a steel dropped forging.
My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .
