In the 16 years I have owned my 41 I took its longest trip today to Flint, MI. About 160 miles. Drove around 50 MPH and up to 60. Car handled well and the show was at the Crossroads Village & Huckleberry Railroad an historic village. Interesting to see old farm tractors but few old cars that weren't Hot Rodded. Of the 300 vehicles I saw a restored 39 Chevy and a restored 40 Oldsmobile and about 20 Model A Fords from a local club. The rest were cars of the late 50's, and up. Disappointing when you think of the history of Flint, MI and a major historical museum as the host.
This was my first experience with vapor lock, but the car sat for 8 hrs so started right up when we left. I drove the car about a block when I noticed the linkage on the shift was the smoothest it had ever been but the car wasn't shifting out of 1st gear. Found a manicured parking lot and raised the hood to check out the transmission linkage on the steering column. Didn't take but a few seconds to see that the linkage was hanging loose at the bottom. The Carter pin had fallen out or broke. Found some friendly (helpful) Sloan volunteers to help me locate a replacement Carter pin, Bobby pin, or piece of wire. Finally settled on a keychain. Crawled under the car and attached it and made it all the away home without a problem.
Moral of the story was I need a first aide kit for my 41 and a lot of nice people are always willing to help. Fortunately, for one of the guys I had a Chevy Corvette Racing Jacket that I brought to give away and I was able to find it a new home.
The key ring looks to be doing the job nicely, I am surprised the spring was still there after flapping in the breeze. Charlie will be pleased some one else is praising a 41. Tony
