The Carter W-1 570S was used on military trucks from 1941 to 1948. I'm guessing these trucks had the early splash oiler 235 engines. I had a 570S mounted on my stock 233 cu. in. 1936 Pontiac straight 8 motor and it performed very well, but it might not be suitable for the 1957 Chevrolet 235.

The later Carter W-1 carbs (483s, 574s, 684s) had a main venturi size of 1 1/4 inch.

The Carter YF's designed for the mid-1950's 235 had a main venturi size of 1 5/16 inch.

The Carter W-1 has a mounting pattern of 2 11/16 inches (S.A.E. size 2).

The mid-1950's 235 had a mounting pattern of 2 15/16 inches (S.A.E. size 3).

If one does the math, the YF for the 235 will flow approximately 10 percent more air at wide open throttle.

So, will the W-1 work? Of course, if you use an adapter to bolt it to the engine.

Will it work as well at wide open throttle as the slightly larger carburetor? In a single word.................no.

Too bad Carter discontinued the W-2 after a single year of production.

Jon.

I have a YF that water had gotten into it and rebuilt it but could never get it to run right so I might look for another.

In my opinion the best alternative for the 1957 and later 235 is the Carter 3211s. They aren't very common, but they do a great job on the later model 235 engines. If you see these on eBay with a manual choke, get far away. These are mongrel carburetors made of various parts...none of which are likely to be compatible.
