I've seen in parts books that 1939, 40+ models use a leather boot around the shift linkage.
The pictures in the exploded diagrams it just looks like a shadow so can't tell what it covers. I suspect it covers the linkage at the end of the vacuum shift unit? I was thinking it might fit over the clutch fork and protect the opening in the clutch housing (bellhousing) but since it doesn't cover older model years suspect it's vacuum shift related...
My transmission top cover is similar to the 1939 since I have a cable and shift connection due to my column shift, so always wondered if it might be useful (and look cool being leather lol) on my car.
Thanks

The 1941 parts book lists a leather boot for linkage for 1939 only. The 1940--1948 completely revised linkage lists the two piece stamped metal boot.. The illustration for 1939 shows the boot but difficult to determine just what it looks liike. It looks like it goes just forward of the vacuum cylinder. The linkage it covers is quite a long span from the cylinder linkage below to the transmission lever above. The shop manaul picture is a little better but still not too clear.
