"VINs were first used in 1954 in the United States. From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats. In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States standardized the format. It required all on-road vehicles sold to contain a 17-character VIN, which does not include the letters I (i), O (o), and Q (q) (to avoid confusion with numerals 1 and 0)."

Here in Aus there was a number (manufacturer defined format) from prior to 1938 until 1988 (stamped into the main frame) when we also went to the 17 character format. This number is now global and if you know the secret code will include country of manufacture, the model designation, month and year, the major options and assembly line sequence (serial number).

If one wants to pick nits the very definition of VIN is Vehicle Identification Number so any number used on the title to identify a vehicle is it's VIN. The numbers used for that identification have changed over the years but my '38 uses the engine number so that is the VIN for the car.

Tiny,
In this case I do want to pick one. The use of all capital letters indicates a formal or specific name or title. In this case it is the initials for a Federal regulation. If you use lower case letters then it can be a initials for a common term. So VIN is the number specified by the regulation. Vin or vin or "vin" or v.i.n. can refer to any vehicle identification number or serial number. At least that is what was drilled into our heads by numerous English teachers. Guess that doesn't happen in schools today.

It is indeed a formal title, for a number that identifies a vehicle. I'd have to disagree that all caps specifically means it's a Federal regulation. The use of all caps for all sorts of acronyms is far to common to make that claim.

The 17 digit VIN was standardized in '81 I believe.
