Noticed last night my clutch peddle is a little wobbly, side to side. I haven’t got under yet to look it over. Will this be an issue with me driving it daily. Do I have to worry about it slipping off and not being able to use it.

1951 bel air. 4 speed Saginaw. Seems to be loose at the point where it goes into the transmission case.

Your description of your car is baffling. Do you have a '51 truck with a 4 speed transmission? Or do you have a '51 Bel Air 2-door hardtop convertible ( the only Bel Air made in 1951)? If it's a Bel Air hardtop, it must have a modernized drive train to have a Saginaw 4 speed as the only transmissions for '51 cars were a 3 speed standard or PowerGlide automatic.

The 1951 Bel Air came with a 3 speed manual transmission and strg column mounted shifter and the clutch pedal pivots on a shaft that goes thru the master cylinder. Is this what you have or has it been modified?

hardtop convertible

The above is also baffling. If the car is a hardtop how can it also be a convertible???

May sound strange but as a kid we often referred to the hardtop as a "hardtop convertible" because it had no post.

Yeah, I have a 51 bel air two door hard top. It has a 1954 235 with a Saginaw 4 speed hooked to it. Thought it was a general question and lot of specifics weren’t necessary.

Yes , it has been switched out. It has a 1954 235 with a Saginaw 4 speed hooked to it. Was just curious how much slop is to much slip. Next to the gear box or where it goes into the transmission.

Don't think it should be sloppy. I recommend you investigate and, if possible, snug it up.

Good luck,

Not sure of what was changed to put in a Saginaw 4 speed but I am guessing that the clutch pedal mounting is original style and pivots on a shaft mounted in the brake master cylinder. If it wobbles more than 1/8" it would be best to fix it though I doubt it will fall out.

If you want a photo let me know. I just removed a master cylinder and pedals from a 52 that I am scrapping.

I agree that if it is the original floor mounted pedal the bushings are probably worn. Most of them were never given any lubrication when the vehicle was serviced.
