I just moved to Tucson AZ and would like to know if anyone out there is in Tucson as well. I have a 1935 4 Door Standard. It was my Dad's and they just dropped her off yesterday from Maryland. I could not get Her started to save mt life but a friend helped me push her through the storage facility and into a unit. I know 65 Mustangs like the back of my hand but 1935's a whole new world. I did get her started today with the help of cleaning some plugs and a squirt of Starter fluid. I am just hoping to connect with someone to help me get to know the Car a little Better.
VCCA members have access to a list of over 50 Technical Advisors who can help you with your car. It's worth the price of membership! While you can get a lot of information for free in this forum, sometimes the info that you REALLY need is only available from the right person. This is what "The World's Best Chevrolet Club" is all about!
I had a similar experience a year ago (yesterday) with my 41 SD. It was my great grandmothers and had been restored but seldom driven. During the trip from Texas to Delaware, all kind of crap broke loose in the fuel tank. When we tried to start it, we eventually clogged up the cheap fuel filter just prior to the carb. Eventually I had to have the carb taken apart to get reliable fuel flow (and not flooding). I also added a glass bowl fuel filter just before the carb. The most important thing I learned was a good starting process. The main point is it’s not going to start without help if it’s sat for more than two days. I don’t use starter fluid, but instead keep the quart cans of fuel from the Home Depot lawn equipment aisle (expensive, but no mess refilling, and a can lasts me a few months). I’ve been toying with the idea of an electric fuel pump near the tank
If you don't get a reply soon let us know. Several of us know VCCA members in the Tucson area. Going directly to the Region Director is the first thing to try. Some of them don't check their emails often so may take a few days to respond.
The reason that you have not had Tucson members piping up may be owing to them not having a clue to why your 35 won't crank. Just kidding you.
As you work on that old jewel remember that if you have spark, timing, fuel and compression then something has to go. In other words it will crank,
One or more of the above must be out of whack.
Check in this order:
a. Firing. Get it turning over and have the missus take hold of a spark plug wite (she'll which one. Tell her any one will do. If she tries to kill you then you know it was hot. If she doesn't then you get to live another day..
b. Fuel: While you did in the driver's seat and operat the foot feed, have her pour some raw gas (get some without ethanol so the nasayers won't have that escuse if it fails to crank. Have her pour a trickle into the carburetor while standing as far away as possible. Warn her to not pour it all over the engine. Hold a switch in your left hand and when you want her to pour give her a whack on her behind with tthe switch. The switch is merely to get her attention at the most oportune time. Don't use a baseball bat. She might just take it away from you and beat the fire out of you. Or worse.
c. Compression: Take a plug out and have her hold her thump over the hole. Tell her that if she feels anything that feels like it is sucking but the opposite of that to let you know. This is a relatively safe check and won't fester any ill will between the two of you.
d. Timing: Requires her to use two hands, Have her repeat the compression test and the spark test at the same time. While holding the spark plug wire have her use the other hand's thumb over te spark plug hold and let you know if she notices and jult of juels when her thumb gets blown off. You will know if the engine passes this test. Be prepared to run.
If she is a caring missus, in time she will forgive you. Forgive, yes, Forget, No.
Remind her that when she married you it was for the good times and the bad. Just don't let her start counting up the bad times. Think diamonds.
Good luck. Afteer you get the car runing you can then count of members out there to come out of the woodwork. Not before. That's whyhe missus comes in handy. You got to know how to handle them.
I couldn't stop laughing :) but u must not know my wife. Her real name is Sunshine but don't let that fool u she makes God walk away :)
lol
Yea getting her cranked was the other day best feeling in the world. She was my Dads and I promised him to keep her in tip top shape, I know he was looking down on me and shaking his head as me and my friend pushed her through the storage facility. Again hoping to connect with some Tucsonans
