My '32 has a single wiper blade. The wiper isn't working at all, when I turn the button I can hear slight vacuum and then it stops. Today I thought I would check the vacuum lines to make sure there were no holes. I couldn't find the lines coming through the firewall. This is a vacuum system, correct?

Yes, your windshield wiper is a vacuum system.

Sounds like your wiper set up is not original. The line comes off the top/rear of the intake manifold and goes thru the dash. It then connects to a steel line that runs inside the door pillar and over the windshield header and attaches with a hose to a tube built on to the w/w motor mounting bracket. The motor has a push /pull flat bar lever and not a turn knob.

Steve,
you are right, it's a push / pull, I was messing with it today a few minutes and I can hear the suction, but the wiper isn't working.

can you test for vacuum to the motor. pull the hose and check with gauge, see if you have vacuum there, compare to vacuum at manifold.

if like typical vacuum motors, the flapper may be worn or need rebuilding, or re greased. i rebuilt my trico with the rebuild kit, was not hard, and learned a lot. of course mine in the 1929 version :) Trico Wiper Rebuild 1929

If the motor is original it will have a heart shaped cover and be held in position with two barrel nuts. It's easily removed and much easier to free up when removed. If you don't mind working on things with small parts it's not a complicated motor.

While it is true that most 1932 wiper motors had the heart shaped covers, not all. Early cars had a wiper motor with the basic motor design. That was both for the single and two wiper versions. Yes there was an accessory passenger side wiper in 1932.

Also some GMC's have the heart shaped motor. I got one that I thought would fit my 32 but when I sent it out for rebuild the "Wiperman" advised it fit a 34 GMC.

These aren't the best of pics, but I think they show enough to show which wiper I have

I replaced the wiper motor in my car with a replacement motor made by Trico. It is slightly larger then the original and has more power. The mounting studs are the same as the original. I found two NOS Trico wiper motors in the bottom of a box of parts I bought.

Are you interested in selling one of them?

You may have installed the motor for the accessory dual wiper setup. The motor looks the same but is thicker with larger paddle and therefore more power. It was also used on other GM cars.

So I took my wiper off, will I have to open it up in order to lube it?

That would be the best way to do it, especially if the wiper has some dried grease inside.

That would be best so all the old hardened grease can be removed. From previous post on Chat I believe the cover gaskets are the same as used on Fords of the era and should be available from one of their resto suppliers. If you can get a few drops of ATF into the motor and the shaft turns it may help to soften the old grease. I have not personally done that but doing so has previously been discussed on Chat. Try doing a search or maybe someone who has done so will chime in.

Finding a gasket to fit this wiper motor is proving to be difficult. Does anyone know where I might purchase one? I can't seem to locate a part number on the wiper, nor does the '32 ford wiper that closely resembles mine have a part number either. If anyone has any leads I'd appreciate it. I've already checked with Gary Wallace and Filling Station, both no go's.

The gaskets are thin paper. I have made them out of computer printer paper in the past. Works fine.

My dad used to use brown paper bags to make thin paper gaskets. Seemed to work for him. Of course with the advent of plastic bags brown paper has become sort of a novelty.

OK, so I make my own, do you use some sort of adhesive on it, or just put it back together with the gasket in place? Sorry for all of the questions, this is of course my first shot at this.

Assemble it dry, no adhesives.
