Wes, The original material was pretty smooth with no linear grain like a Model A or perhaps a Chevy of that age. It had a very fine texture. I have the wrong material on my car. I have seen the good stuff for sale but I don't recall where I saw it.

Hey Mike, thanks for the response. The materials I have samples of are called cobra, tall short random lines, fairly rough and Tuxedo, a random mix of very short lines. Would like to find an original car to verify.

I have an original phaeton top that I can take some pictures of and post. Its black on the top and white on the lower section. I think there's even cotton stuffing in between the fabric?

I was told that the Tuxedo was correct for the 35 Chevy. I was told that Hampton Coach/Lebaron Bonny used the same material for the Fords and Chevys and it was a Ford pattern. Nobody really knew I guess and it looked good.

I suspect that both Ford and Chevy used the same fabric in original production. Haartz cloth is what I understand to be a reasonable replacement if not 100% accurate. It was as far as I could tell on my 1919 FB Touring. Yes, you have to factor that the existing material has been subjected to dirt, dust, sunlight and other factors that change the appearance.
How Sweet the roar of a Chevy four!
