Hi n j,

My recommendation is to go to your local parts house and purchase 4 quarts of 85W-140 Gear Oil. Fill the transmission until it starts to run out of the fill hole. Do the same to the rear end. Occasionally, check the rear end and if overfull, drain until level with the fill hole again. Check transmission and refill a like amount.

Yep, N.J., that is what those that know use. I checked the 600 wt. I ordered a Qt. $7.00 to check out seems it checked out same as 120 Wt multipurpose gear oil, checked it with my drilling fluids vis. & Lbs/ gallon kit and also with a fluid density tester and PH test kit, I also smelled it and checked out the color in bright sunlight it looks to me to be the same-O same-O stuff.
Then I went to Tractor Supply ,Every town in rural Texas has a Tractor Supply Co. Store, and bought 5 gallons of the 85 - 140 multipurpose gear lube $25.xx and a el cheapo bucket pump with a too-short hose for less than $20 and went home and added 3 foot of 1/2"copper tubing with a hook in one end. I drained (some of my Texas friends say Dreened) the gear boxes and refilled them with the 85wt.-140wt. everything seems ok. It don't even drip from the rear end (I put in a new cork gasket that I spent 30 minutes hammer cutting and punching).

but if you think we are crazy or wrong go ahead and pay $7.00 for a Quart of 600 Wt. after all it is only MONEY!

Yeah, and after MrMack did all those preliminary tests, he did the ultimate test: Put all four of JYD's paws in the oil, slid him across the sea-mint floor and measured how far he went!!!

Thank you all for the help, I will use the 85w-140 as stated!
And very nice going with that new grand daughter Mr Mack, I can only think how proud you must be! And concerning the funds, mack, you can now give that pretty little angle $10.000 plus a year and it wont even hurt you in the wallet, (tax-free ) Enjoy your little one. and god bless you and your family!!!!

N.J. that is right, and by the time she is 16 it will be a tidy sum, grandparents should do something like that, young parents have it rough for so many years before they can stand on their own any more than making it from payday to payday.

I guess that is why the Good Lord keeps us old codgers around for 4 score anymore!

Should 85-W140 also be used in mid 30s Chev rear ends and transmissions?

Would 85W-140 be satisfactory for the rear end of a '54 Power Glide? or 85W-90?

I think I would go with the 85w-140, that is what you would get at a Jiffy-lube.
