Got the first of the 4 Trucks home today. Told it was a 27 but it has front brakes, a 346709 Ferro Engine Casting and a Body code of 3LP 5516. I think its a 28? Not sure where to look up the Body Code?

Kinda rough shape but some good glass, tin, head lights. Gotta put her to bed so I can get /Truck #2 Tomorrow.

LP is indeed a late '28. They were made the last 2 months of '28 production at some plants and shorter period at others.

I had no idea the LP was such a short production run. Seems like most '28 trucks I see have 4 wheel brakes.

I suspect most of the surviving '28 trucks are the AB (1/2 ton) variety, not the one ton trucks. This is just my 'gut' feeling.

We got two more of the Trucks home today. Another 28 3LP and a I think 27 LM or LO? Hard to read build plate. It doesn't have any front brakes so I assume it's a27. During this trip I also bought a 1930 Chevy 2 door coach, a 48 REO Speedwagon 1 ton Truck, and a 56 Plymouth Savoy. Say that three times fast.

gramps, you be one busy guy!

There are a couple of clues about whether the other truck is a '27 LM or a '28 LO. Does the engine head have one or two exhaust ports? If one, chances are it is a '27. 1928 was the only year with the two exhaust ports on the 4 cylinder head.

You can also check out the casting date on the block. It is near the distributor: a three digit code. The first character indicates the month (A=Jan, B=Feb, etc.). The middle digit is the day of the month and the rightmost digit is the year.

Another clue is the transmission. For '27, the standard tranny was a three speed, although 4 speed was an option. For '28, the trannys were all the 4 speed. If it is a 4 speed, it has a latch pull on the shifter to allow it to go into reverse. The 3 speed does not have this latch mechanism.

Cheers, Dean

Interesting! My 1928 LO, 2 port exhaust head and engine side covers has a three speed transmission and no front brakes. The data plate reads Capitol 12LO7899. I bought it in 1953 that way and there was no indication that anything had been modified.
