Hello Everyone,

The front suspension is back together (finally) . I think in my last post I had mentioned a leak at the front of the trans and it appears Chevgene's suggestion of a new slinger nut was possibly in order.

A little history, I had replaced the original clutch with a '38 clutch which required the correct front bearing retainer for the use of the later style throw out bearing.

After removing the trans, I removed the bearing retainer and ... SURPRISE ...the old slinger nut fell out in 4 pieces.

Currently I have the water pump off so that I can replace the pump to plate and the plate to block gaskets as they appeared to have deteriorated and were leaking. The "leak " hole under the pump shaft was dry, so gaskets only.

Last thing to do is mount the new tires !!

Make sure to use a new nut and stake it properly The nut is part number 591150 and they are always on ebay as they were used for many years.

Thank you Chevgene,

Appears I have to take it apart and perform that step. Not sure how I over looked that. ( will look into my repair manual )
I did buy a new nut and I found the correct wrench to tighten it.

I may have asked this question about belt tension in the past, but forgot to write into my notes section of the repair manual.. What is considered correct tension, I couldn't find it in the repair manual. I have a tool to measure it.

In going thru some of my dads' manuals, I found the one for the tension tool.

Single groove with a generator, new belt, 90 lbs tension, reuse belt, 80 lbs tension.

Dave,

Do you have any use for a Carter 1937 Chevy carburetor kit?

I had the 5 rims blasted and painted by the students of Shawsheen Tech ( located in my home town ) and my 5 new tires are being mounted by Schlott tire, a local business, and my new hub caps/trim rings arrived yesterday. Just have to pin strip the rims and the car is on the ground.

Happy Birthday to me.......too bad I woke up sick....

Pin stripped wheels yesterday. They are now on the car and the car is on the ground. Polarized the generator and started the car. Let it warm up then adjusted the carburetor and checked the water level.
Tried my hand at adjusting the town & country horns and they sound okay. Not sure how sharp they should be.
Next stop ... Inspection station, tomorrow.

Hi Dave, in your post you mentioned pin stripping your wheels. Did you use that pin stripping painter or some other means? At one time someone here had posted an instruction page on how to adjust those town and country horns. After their adjusted right, they are" LOUD"! Thanks, Joe.

Hello Joe,
This will get a bit wordy, but please bear with me.
My best friend had purchased ( @ 40 years ago) a "pin stripping" wheel kit to dress up his white spoke wheels on his Chevy 4x4 pick-up.
Before sand blasting and painting, I put a hub cap on one of the rims and measured the pin strips using the edge of the hub cap as a reference. With the rims painted and the tires mounted, I backed off the brake shoes on the left front and mounted the tire with (2) lug nuts. Placed a hub cap on the rim and using a metal clothes hanger, cut and shaped to use as a gauge, I spun the wheel slowly while my friend held the pin stripping guide against the hub cap to get the location. We pin stripped all (5) wheels in an hour.

I'll check the 6 volt forum, but if someone has those instructions, please let me know. My horns sound blah, not sharp.

Hi Dave, About those horns, If you click onto the 1937-1941 fourms and click back to page #3 and scroll down to 40 horns sound weak, the thread your looking for is there. I know, it's for a 40 but the innards look the same as the town and country horns. It will take some time to adjust but in the end, they'll BLAST you out of the garage!! I've been band from honking mine in the garage, it startels the wife and makes our 2 dogs bark a lot!! Hope this helps, Joe. P. S. thanks for the tip on painting the rims.

Hello Joe,

I hope the pin stripping kit is still available, it was real easy to use. Thanks for the lead on the horns, I down loaded the instructions and printed out a page. Weather is suppose to be crappy this weekend so I will be out in the garage playing with the horns.

Hello Everyone,

Last weekend my wife's cousin and his wife came up from New Jersey and we took them for a ride out to the Manadnock area of N.H. Visited Hot Art, which was featured on Chronicle, a local small businesses here in New England. A nice scenic ride with a stop for lunch at the Country Store in Harrisville on our way home.

To all VCCA members, check your areas, there are a lot of possible day tours that could take you on an adventure in your Chevrolet.

Looks to be a great agenda for a NNER VCCA tour. Just add in the Peterborough Basket Co. and maybe the Macdowell Dam as they have a great picnic area with a shelter if it rains.
