I am looking to replace my broken 1953-54 Powerglide Shift Indicator Needle. All the chevy vendors have them listed in their catalogs but the part is no longer available. Any ideas where I can find one. Thanks! Frank
The pointer got broken on my '53. I found a vendor on ebay selling new ones. I've not had to use it because I was able to still use my original. You'll notice the pointer part fits into a slot on the selector lever shaft. Slide the pointer into the slot then wrap a piece of safety wire around the the selector lever shaft and over the base of the pointer. Twist the ends of the wire a couple of turns, trim any excess wire and put the cover back on. I did mine almost a year ago and it's been working fine since. I didn't take any pictures when I did it. If you can't figure it out I'll go out & pull the cover to snap a pic or two.

Didn't I see a post on here yesterday (4/8) about making one by using some kind of clip or did I imagine it? Sure not here now !! Is it my computer loosing things ?
The method I used doesn't require searching for a large E clip. Safety wire, if you have it, or picture hanging wire will work. I'll go out to the garage and take a couple of pics today and post them so my explanation makes more sense.

OK, here's how I fixed mine. Both "legs" of the OEM pointer broke off. I tried to glue them with no luck. I noticed that the actual pointer fits into a slot on the selector lever shaft and the legs help hold it in place. If I could find a way to hold it in place the legs aren't needed. I took the pointer and removed the remnants of the legs with a utility knife. I then took a hack saw blade and made a slight groove in the top of the pointer base to keep the wire from slipping off. I then took a length of safety wire, looped it over the pointer's base and under the selector lever shaft, put a couple of turns on the wire then cut off the excess. I checked for operation and clearance with the cover that goes over it. When all was good I reinstalled the cover with the two screws. It took maybe 20 minutes. If you don't have safety wire you can use picture hanging wire. The pics below show the pointer wired in place and the cover in place. If you need further explanation just holler.
