Hi anyone fitted a thermostat to a 171 chev 4, do thay run any better, wondering if it might cause over heating in hot weather by restricting coolant flow?

Restricting flow can be beneficial particularly if air is being drawn into the cooling system. A thermostat is designed to increase the temperature of a cooling system to make heaters more effective and slightly increase the engine efficiency. Generally they don't cause overheating.

I wont comment on the early models but a lot of post 60 vehicles the water pump is capable of moving a lot more coolant the the rest of the system can cope with so a thermostat was fitted to restrict the flow to allow appropriate cooling. The early models may well not have this situation as the water pump doesnt appear to have the efficiency of the later models. Tony

I have a thermostat in my '28 canopy express and have not had a boilover since I got it running seven years ago. That includes over 2200 miles of driving and 300 of those miles at the 55th Anniversary meet in South Lake Tahoe (high altitude and close to 100 degrees F).
That being said, I also have an oil cooler installed that helps keep the temperature down.
Cheers, Dean
