Click on the "Chevy Trucks" forum, and then click on the "engine serial number" topic. The information posted there may help you. :cool2: laugh laugh laugh

David,
Since no such thing as a VIN existed in 1948, different states used different numbers for titling of vehicles. Some states used the engine number and some used the manufacturer's vehicle ID number. For example, my 53 3604 was originally titled in Missouri and they used the manufacturer's ID. When states used the engine number, this could be a real problem if the engine was ever changed.

On the Advance Design trucks the ID plate is (or should be) located on the driver's side door column. For a 1948 3/4 ton, it will begin with a 1 or 2 digit Assembly Plant Code (e.g. 21 = Janesville, WI). Next will be the letter F indicating that it is a 48 (E=47, F=48, G=49, etc.) Next will be the letter R for a 3600 (3/4 ton). That will be followed by a letter between A and L for the month of assembly. Finally, will be a 6 digit sequential production number (first truck off the line was 1001 and incremented from there.) Got all of this info from Don Moen\'s Serial Number page .

Can't help you with the engine serial number. As JD suggests, I'd wander over to the Chevy Trucks forum and ask them for input.
