Hi.
I need to pull out the engine of a 39.
Google says the engine weights 630lbs (can't really tell is that without the gearbox?)
i'll also have to take it some place downstairs so i don't have much choice but take it a part.
Does anyone now how much the big engine parts weight?
-cylinder head
-block
-crankshaft + pistons + flywheel
-manifold

The smaller parts you list are easily handled by a person. The head is heavy but I don't have a specific weight. I'd guess in the neighborhood of 50 lbs.. As for the block I have no clue.

head 70 pounds
crankshaft 70 pounds
flywheel 15 pounds
manifolds 15 pounds
pistons and rods each less than two pounds
The bare block could be handled by one strong person

Head and bare block are easy with 2 people.

The 625lb is likely realistic for the whole engine assembled. I shipped one complete with trans, full clutch, flywheel, starter, even a belt and it was in the 1000lb range on a flimsy pallet. When I researched it there were only a couple diesel engines and a hemi that weighed more for a passenger vehicle.

I am not sure everyone noted the part that said it has to go "downstairs". I don't know how many stairs but if one person that is a challenge and I would not want to be the one to try. If on a level surface it can easily be handled by one person .

When I installed a BARE block in my 1939 35 years ago I got the block down stairs by my self (draging it almost).....after assembling it two of my boys go it out of the basement.
Chevroet lists the engine complete with clutch a 567 pounds and 617 with trans,,,,,,1947 216.

Ha , back in the early 70s, I carried the bare block for my ''37 down my basement stairs and then the crankshaft with the flywheel attached, as I remember the crank and flywheel felt heavier than the block. I can't remember for sure why I took them down there ( I suppose to clean them and keep them dry for the winter) but I also carried them back out (one at a time). I was young and strong back then and weighed about 145 lbs. myself. Those days are long gone. blush

Gene, your sons must have been pretty strong to carry an assembled engine up the stairs!

As individual parts 1 person could carry them on a good level surface but doubt I would attempt the block on stairs though.

Thanks everyone. So with help from another person seems realistic do carry the parts into the basement.
That is encouraging.

As a young man I once carried heavy things like that. I call it "strong back weak mind syndrome". Because I did that I'm now an inch & a half shorter and have degenerative disc disease in nearly every low back vertebra. After looking at my MRI my doctor asked me how I got out of bed every day without screaming.

From my own experience, I say that it is tough to carry everything on your own, I called my friends, and we did this together.

Come on, guys. This is so easy. All you have to do is tell the missus luv2 that if she will move the engine from in front of the TV and relocate it downstairs that you will take her out to dinner at the fanciest place in town. Plus, you will remove the lawn mower and weed-whacker yourself. The engine will be downstairs the next day. Will too1

A few years ago, I bought a 600-pound capacity two-wheel hand truck at Northern Tool to move heavy parts around. It was relatively inexpensive at the time.

The Chevy straight six weighs more than the Chevy small block and does wreck backs!
