Hi there I have had issues trying to identify what my motor is out of and what year it is the casting number for the block is 3970010 not 8 I scrubbed it down to make sure and casting date is J198 but the suffix code is pretty much all gone I need help please

I quickly found this thread on AACA where they have covered an in depth look at your engine numbers in December. Appears this was a common small block used for 302/327/350 so you need to look at other physical indicators like the stamp pad and other casting numbers on the other engine parts. This looked simple when I first posted and then saw the other post's details. This post might do better if moved to the 1965-1970 Forum on here and hopefully someone has analyzed these numbers previously with the possibility it could be a 1969 302.

The one thing that jumps to mind is your location - this could be a Canadian block so might see some variation or discrepancy on the numbers the guys were tossing around in the below post.

That is only a casting number that means very little What is important is the number STAMPED into the block in front of the right head gasket.
