Did any 65 Chevelles come with a factory rear sway bar ? By the way, I am looking for a 65 327 4 speed coupe.

The SS396 came with a rear sway bar and a heavier front sway bar.

figured if one had a sway bar it would be the big block, thanks

I think all SS came with sway bars

In 1966 with the SS396, there was a RPO = Regular Production Option F40 called "Special Front & Rear Suspension". It is my understandfing that F40 in 1966 for the SS396 it meant.... heavier front and rear coil springs, heavier front sway bar and the adding of a rear sway bar. The rear sway bar is bolted to the lower rear control arms which were boxed on the SS 396s.

I am doing some more research to verify this. Sorry, I do not have any technical data on the 1965 Chevelles but I would bet that the 1965 327 Chevelles didn't come with rear sway bars installed from the factory. Yes, they built 201 1965 Chevelles with 396's and they called it the Z-16. The rumor has it that 200 were coupes and 1 was a convertible that was specially built for a GM employee. I would imagine that all of the Z-16s had rear sway bars installed from the factory.

For 1966 Chevelles, I found the following information in an original Booklet entitled..."1966 New Product Training Program Booklet", produced by Chevrolet. Under Rear Suspension, Section #4 it states for full size Chevrolets...."New optional suspension for turbo-jet engines includes higher rate springs, tighter shocks, station wagon stabilizer, a frameless rear stabilizer and 14" x 6" wheels and larger tires. This option supplements rather than replaces RPO F40 ( Heavy Duty Suspension)." Notice that this is for Chevrolets ( Impalas, Caprice, Bel-Air ) and it does not address the Chevelles. Under the heading for Chevelle, it says..."Carryover". That means a carryover of what was used in the 1965 models for the 1966 Chevelles.
