I'm rebuilding a 1963 409/425 engine and having trouble finding books and pictures detailing this engine. The books available out there are for all Chevy big and small blocks but seem to jump over the 409's. I'm looking for things like proper bolt head markings, paints colors, belt configuration as I'm adding pwer steering and general close up pictures and specs. Can anyone help? Thanks Terry auto

I think that there are "409" clubs, check around and they should be able to help you. I will check with my local club and see if I can get you some help. laugh

Terry, The VCCA has some great tech advisors, and two very sharp 409 guys. However this service is for VCCA members only. I am good friends with one of them. As far as 409 clubs go there was one out in San Diego about 20 years ago, long gone now. There are none that I am aware of. There is a site dedicated to 348/409's but most of the information I have seen on that site has been wrong! Showcars in New Ulm MN has a pretty good catalog with some good tech advice. What are you looking to find out in particular? Even though I am the 348 T/A I do have some experiance with 409's and I even own one! I really think you should become a member and take advantage of the Tech Advisor service.

John, I am a VCCA Member and have won a senior and Best of Show with my 62 Vette I recently sold. I'm going in a different direction with this car it's a 55 Belair Convertable with a 409/425 that was installed about 25 years ago by the previous ower. What I want to do is bring the car (color & interior) back to the original Gypsy Red and Shorline Beige. Then restore the 63 409 with all the correct colors and bolt head markings etc. It will be kind of an unusual "era" car I think. Color pictures will be the biggest help close-up even better. Do you know of any publications out there. Thanks Terry

Terry, just so you know there s no VCCA member number listed next to your profile on the site. I will check the bolts on the 63 block I have on the stand in the morn and get back to you, as far as engine colors everything os orange except for the aluminum intake and the chrome valve covers. Just seems like a lot work to make things correct on an incorrect car, sort of like who will notice? You should update your profile

I found 2 409 clubs that might or might not be in operation today. Information is from the "Past Model Information" booklet from Chevy Motor Division.

409 Club of America
PO Box 1931
Glendora, CA 91740

and

National 409 Chevy Club
2510 E. 14th Street
Long Beach, CA 90804

Good luck.
