I am looking at a 1951 GMC panel truck and I would like to make sure that the engine is same year. I have not had any luck finding information on the GMC engine. The number at the rear of the distributor is A228458059. Anyone know what this engine is or where to find the information?

First 3 numbers appear to be the engine size for GMC = 228 full pressure oiling with insert bearings. I suspect the rest of this number is an engine serial #.
Is this number stamped? Casting number should be raised.
From some quick googling it appears that the 228 could be a Canadian engine and most of the GMC Casting #'s around this era are 7 numbers long and appear to all start with #2.

The number is stamped behind the distributor. I didn't get the casting number . Are these pretty good engines?

Where did you find this information? I have not been able to find much information. I must be looking in the wrong place.
Thanks, Pete

Goggle "GMC engine Casting number" or variations and you get hits on vendors and lists on other forums. Jim Carters Trucks site is one site with a listing.
The GMC engines seem to be popular for old school souping up so suspect they were well built.
You really need the raised casting number(s) as the stamped serial # is mainly just a sequential number and doesn't have much detail to interpret.

For future reference, there is a site, I think it is oldgmctrucks.com, where they really know their stuff on GMC.

A228458059 A = Cylinder bore is +0.005, rod journals are -0.010 and bearing journals are -0.010 228 = 228 cubic inch GMC inline 458059 is the regular sequential serial number for that motor. The 228 was produced and used in US production GMC light duty trucks from '39 until 1953 Engine s/n prefix key is about mid-page in left column. ![[Linked Image from oldgmctrucks.com]](http://www.oldgmctrucks.com/photos/EngineSpecs_Pg1G.gif)
