As some of you know I have a 1946 Chevy truck. The Engine is not original and I an having trouble understanding the numbers on it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. The number is CON4 J 121 ...would that be October 12 1951 ?

the numbers you have listed do not ID the engine.
First you need the block casting number. It is on the right lower side of the block and will have 7 raised numbers with the first number being a 7. If it is a later engine the number may be behind the starter.
The other ID is the numbers STAMPED into the horizontlal shelf behind the distributor.

If the last letter is a J the engine is from a 1959-1962 1/2 ton truck
The 3836848 head casting number went from 1956-1962 235 engines.
