Have put on new brakes on all 4 and have car on jack stands. Started engine, put in gear, loud snap noise. With the car on jack stands, and car in gear, should BOTH rear wheels spin??? The speedometer is working, car is 1931 four door sedan, AACA 1st Junior.
No only one will turn and at twice the speed. The only time both would spin is if you have a positraction differential.

Often only 1 wheel will turn with both off the round. A quick test, while all is in the air engine off and trans in gear, brakes released turn 1 rear wheel by hand for forward travel the other should turn for reverse travel. If only 1 turns try turning the other by hand, if it turns you have trouble in the middle, if it doesnt turn i suspect something has let go in the brakes of the wheel that doesnt turn. Tony
The right rear wheel will turn. It is the dominant wheel so it's the one that gets the little extra force necessary to turn. (Owing to the way the engine drive train turns. On cars with regular spider gears, one wheel is always dominate, usually the right rear and the other one is just along for the ride. Just rolling along to keep with the rest of the car. (not explained well, but there you have it.)
Let the car down off the right rear wheel until it touches the surface of the ground or whatever (concrete?). Then crank it up and put the car in a forward gear. Left rear will then be dominant and thus turn.
Or run over here to Fayetteville and I'll demonstrate this action for you.
If the left wheel doesn't turn then "you have trouble, Yes sir, I mean trouble. Trouble spelled with a "P", called pool. Right here in River City." (from "The Music Man")
Check it out.
Best,
Charlie
BTW: Call the missus in and enjoy when times and troubles were much more simple.
