I am pulling down my 32 engine and cant see what retains the camshaft. The service manual is not helpful on this. I have the front cover and sump off and can see that I will draw it out once I understand what retains it.

You will also need to remove the push rods and followers. There should be a couple holes in the cam gear and if rotated look thru the holes you should see a couple of hex head bolts that retain the thrust plate.

I am not sure they are hex head, I think they may be countersunk head screws but agree on the access through the holes in the cam gear. the shaft wont come out until the followers (lifters) are removed.
