I was working on my Transmission tonight before some friends come over. I have had the transmission completely apart and now I cannot shift in to reverse. I can get all the other gears in forward. I'm thinking that I have put the Idler Gear in backwards. The repair manual does not say much about this part. From the parts book I know that it has 18 & 16 teeth on the gear. Is the 16-tooth gear to the front or the rear? Does anyone think that this would fix my problem of no reverse? :(

Reverse is not syncronized-double clutching is necessary talk talk talk devil My 1934 manual says to have gear with the beveled teeth to the rear.Parts book shows same gear used for reverse idler from 32-36.(not all other gears were the same as early '32 had straight cut gears for 2nd gear) wazzup

Check the free wheeling and reverse lock out linkage. When you shift into reverse the linkage locks the free wheeling drums together.

If you have old Chevrolets, other old Chevrolets will find out where you live.

Thought that I would let you all know I found the problem! laugh   I had the Idler Gear in backwards! :o  After Chev Nut did his post I went and read my 34 manual, just like he said. Only if Chevrolet would of noted it the same way in the 32 manual! auto auto

32Confederate,glad that my suggestion helped. Its always nice to get know if a tip helped some one.Years ago I had the transmission out of my '34 about six times looking for a noise. You would hear strange scraping noises at highway speeds.Putting pressure on the shift lever would change the noise. Then I noticed in the '34 accessory book that they mention that the accessory shift knob (which I had) used a rubber bushing in it to insulate the knob from the lever to prevent noise from being amplified thru the shift lever.Mine had the rubber bushing but it had turned to stone and was nolonger working.Since then its had a black hard rubber shift knob-end of problem.
