Hi. I am restoring my second 490 here in Sweden. It has been resting since 1929, as I understand from info about previous owners. Everything, but engine, which was completely worn out and wheels are OK for restoring. I have a restored engine which I used for some time in a 1924 before I found a 1924 engine, so no problem there. The wheels are all four of questionable standard with loose outer rings and some with one or more loose spokes, so will need four new or used in good and useable condition.
Is there anyone making new wheels for 490s? I know transport will be very high but maybe that is what I have to face.

Olle

1919 490 Touring, running, 1919 490 Touring, under restoration, 1930 Coach, running. 1924 Sedan, sold, 1927 Touring, sold.

If you have steel felloe wheels, why don't you rebuild the wheels yourself?

You can have a wheel shop make new spokes.

No, on early Chevy wheels there where wooden felloes with a steel ring outside.

Is there any wagon /wheel wright shops near you? Its not an overly common practice anymore but there is quite a few near here (BC). a few in Montana, Washington, BC, Saskatchewan. I'm sending mine out to Anderprop, he rebuilds wooden plane propellers and wheels. I believe Coker tire also has a wooden wheel division for restorations.
Hope this helps!

Coker Tire in Chattanooga, TN can make complete wheels or just spokes, felloes, and rims for you.

I scanned a couple of articles from past G&D magazines that describe making wooden spokes from scratch. Peter has added these articles to the Technical Article list in the Members Only section of the main VCCA web site.

These articles will give you an idea of what is involved in making new spokes and might contain enough information for a local wood worker to help you.

Cheers, Dean
