I just installed a new diaphram clutch in my 60 Impala. I put on about 1,000 miles or more on it and I noticed when taking off in first, while letting the pedal up I hear a loud whirling, almost screaching sound until the pedal reaches it's stop. I hear no other noises at any other point of operation and the strange part is that it does not happen all of the time. I don't believe it is the trough-out bearing, because there are no other noises at all, such as a rumble or a growl. The release is real smooth, except when I hear this noise, the pedal feels real weak  It is a new Zoom 10 1/2" clutch. I installed a NOS fork and a new pilot bushing also. My reason for asking if anyone ever had a problem like this is that when everything comes down again mad for inspection I am sure it will look fine :( and I never really want to install a new clutch again, I am starting to feel the pain of working on my back, so I want this one to last.
Any one else had a similar problem? or any idea of what this could be? By the way I installed another flywheel with a fresh cut that I had on the shelf, the old one had many many heat checks, but I knew about that , I was far from kind to it at a younger point of my life. What was a young man to do with a big block four speed, but I have out grown that stage
Any ideas would help
Thanks,
John 348/340HP

Hi John,

I have had similar type problems and on the tear-down discovered a broken spring in the clutch that at times can turn sidewise and result in the type problem you have encountered. If you do remove the disc check each spring very carefully. Agrin
