VCCA Home Forums TECHNICAL - 1945 AND EARLIER 1933-1936 35-35 Drain Tube

There's a metal Drain Tube on the Cowl Vents on 34-35's. There is also a rubber hose on this drain. Does anyone know how long this hose should be? Mine goes all the way down the back of the Engine and below, I know this is not right.

The proving ground picture of a 1934 Master shows it to be about 3 inches long, It sticks almost straight ot with a slight downward slope.

Sounds good. Looks like I've got a lot of extra feet.

That does help but it almost looks out of place. Guess I'll have to cut mine off.

Interesting to see the bow ties on the fan belt. Never seen that before. Although my cars are Holden bodies the drain tubes were originally red rubber. I wonder if the Fisher body cars were also.
From time to time I have also noticed red rubber radiator hoses on old engines that have been lying around for years and wonder if they may be original equipment or fitted at a later date.

The original hose on my '34 was black.
Good quettion....Were the radiator hoses and fan belts the factory installed red or black.

I've seen Red Rubber Hose, original or not it's ugly.

I only like the red hose on the big brass era cars with the T or L head engines and all the copper or brass fittings. By the way the cowl drain hose on my 34 is 2 inches long from the firewall with a downward pitch .

I recall, when I was a boy, my Grandpa and Dad replacing that very hose on Grandpa's car because it got brittle and cracked. This caused a water leak when it rained. The water ran on the fire wall inside the car. The new hose did "stick out" like the one in the photo above. I was impressed with the fact that the water did drain directly onto a "hot" engine. I could not help but think at the time that it would cause a crack. [That's because Grandpa said that cold water on a hot engine would crack it.(a small boy's thinking) ] I ask about the water draining on the engine during a "test" to see if the water would drain inside or out. Dad said, "That much water does not matter." Later, one day when Grandpa was checking the oil, I noticed that the hose was not sticking out any more but had formed along the fire wall in a downward curve. I thought that then the water would miss the engine. It was not until later I realized that the heat from the engine over time had caused the hose to conform to the fire wall.

I may try and heat mine a little before I cut it off.

I love these factory under hood photos. There is so much information there.
I see my horn wire conduit anchored at the water pump. I parted a '35 truck that had the clip. Roger Sorenson wound up with it on his '35 pickup. There should be just two wires entering the conduit but the photo almost looks like there was a cloth loom covering them at the bottom end.

The short hose as pictures is what i have on my car, though I would be tempted to run a longer hose to keep water from spotting the engine if cleanliness over correctness was desired. i am sure GM used the minimum amount of hose to save penny or two, as people probably didn't care about water spots on a valve cover in the 930s.
