I recently saw a 32 Chevrolet coupe for sale with an 8 volt battery in it. I got to thinking is that a good idea with a 6 volt system? How will generator handle it? I understand they wanted more cranking power for the starter. Any thoughts on this fellas?

An 8 volt battery is a poor bandaid for other issues. If you have proper cables and clean connections there's absolutely no valid reason to install an 8 volt battery.

There is more than one post out there about 8 volt batteries. It might offer some short term relief. As Tiny stated, it is just a Band-Aid when you really need more than a Band-Aid.

It helps a little, but could be compared to pissing on a forest fire. To make the car start reliably, the original problem, whatever it was, will need to be fixed. Meanwhile, you go through a lot of bulbs...

So far everyone has stated my line of thinking when I read about the guy putting an 8 volt battery in a 6 volt car. Not a good idea!

Though I wonder if the eight volt battery is enough, by itself, to blow sound bulbs. Aren't they rated at 6-8 volts? I have no experience with using 8=volt batteries. Best, Charlie

Charlie, The higher the voltage the shorter the bulb life. Yes most bulbs are rated 6-8 volts but that does not mean equal life expediency.

Chipper, Makes sense to me. In addition and upon reflection, I suppose the age and condition of the bulb would make a difference, as well. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us. Charlie
