I have a '40 coupe with a 235. It starts OK when cold but is getting harder and harder to start after it's warmed up. Pls what are the most likely causes? Thanks.

What you need is a full tuneup to include serious cleaning of all battery cables. You did not mention having this problem before so I assume this is not a recent rebuild. If the engine (235), is a powerglide engine it has a tendency to start hard when hot. May be necessary to install a HD starter or a PG starter to solve your problem.

Does the starter turn the engine over at the same rpms as when it is cold?

Everything equal, it would be slightly slower. The secret is EVERYTHING IN TIP TOP SHAPE, PARTICULARLY THE BATTERY CABLES.

Fred-"Getting harder and harder to start when hot".....do you mean its turns over slower when hot - or - cranks over well but takes a lot of cranking to start????

Chevgene & Grease Monkey, etal, it seems to crank OK, RPM's about the same(not turning over slower). Last time I couldn't get it started at all without coasting down a hill and using the old-fashioned way of getting it going - dropping the clutch out in second gear, etc.
Battery cables are fairly new. By "cleaning" do you guys mean the posts on the battery, the ends of the cables, the site where it is grounded, what else?
After rebuild the engine has about 12,000 miles on it. Don't know if it's from a Powerglide.
Thanks all for your help.

When an engine requires several turns to start it may be because of an extra draw by the starter that reduces the voltage to the point you only receive a weak/or no spark at the plugs. This may be caused by a deteriorated battery or bad connections somewhere in the system such as dirty battery posts or cables too small.

Make sure that the heat riser is free.If its stuck in the hot position it will overheat the carburetor, causing the gas to boil and spill into the intake manifold, causing a flooded condition.A falty needle and seat in the carb. or incorrect float setting could also cause the problem.
The positive battery cable should be of the large 00 size...almost as large as a heater hose. The ground cable must be in good condition also.Clean ground cable to engine connection as well.
If all else fails try a new coil and keep the old one in the trunk for a spare.....I wouldn't travel with out an extra set of points, condenser, coil and fuel pump in the trunk...just having them there wards off the evil sprits.

That "carb shop" link has really terrific info.
Great to read thru the whole thing. Sorta reminds "us" of all those great "trouble shooting" type tips.
It seems like we've heard them before; but it sure is good to read over them again.
Even better, of course, if we don't have to "use" them......
Bill.

Had this identical problem myself not 6 months ago. The first response here gets my vote. After I took the starter out, testing the battery, the coil, etc it turned out to be..... the battery cable at the terminal. Replaced the cable and lo and behold! I have not had a single instance of hard starting since. Good luck. Go for the simple things first. That lesson continues to repeat itself with my mechanical exploits.

My "48" used to do that. We could never stop for fuel on a run. It would have to be pushed away from the pumps and then we would wait/go shopping for half an hour. Beyond that it ran perfectly. Obviously something was heating up and breaking down. That something was the coil. Problem solved. Nine years later I sold the car to a friend and of course the same thing happened again but I had warned him and on went a spare coil and away he went.

Terry , Coils have a way of sneeking up on you and going bad, hard to find, when they cool down sometimes they check out OK, wish they had a gauge on them like a gas gauge or a temp gauge to show when they are "done"!

I do not recall ever replacing a coil on any early chevrolet I owned back in the 50s. Different story now. I have replaced the coil on the 52 twice in around 10,000 miles. The first time was probably a replacement for the original and the second time was to replace a leaking new coil purchased from NAPA. I suspect that the new replacement stuff is not the same quality.

After putting a 235 in my 1950 Chev it became hard to start when hot so I replaced the original starter with a 1954 which had 4 fields. Starts now more guts.

I'm the one that raised the original question re hard starting my '40 with a hot engine (235 CI). And, I owe you guys some feedback. I installed a new battery cable and a new grounding strap. Also, have been careful to follow instructions and not touch the gas pedal when starting the hot engine.
Result? So far, no more starting problems. Thanks all.

I don't want to sound "critical" or anything "negative" but here is a perfect example of the old adage, "Keep it simple."
The hard starting when warm/hot 235 in his 40 coupe that "fred" asked about turned out to be "just" the battery cables.......
NOT the starter, not the coil, not the carburetor, etc. etc. - "just" the battery cables.
Bill.
