THE OIL BATH AIR CLEANER ON MY '57 HAS GOTTEN OIL INSIDE THE UNIT, (WHICH IS A MYSTERY). THE UNIT IS NOT MADE TO BE TAKEN APART, AND EVERYTIME I TRY TO GET IT READY TO PAINT OIL STARTS TO BLEED OUT AROUNG THE SEAM. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS ON HOW TO GET RID OF THE OIL (WITHOUT DRILLING HOLES) SO THE AIR CLEANER CAN BE PAINTED?

A friend with a F*** had a similar problem with his oil bath, the car had been sitting for about 3 years and moisture had built up in the bottom causing a small pin hole which allowed water/oil to leak into the case.Problem was solved by slightly enlarging the rust out, draining the unit and then sealing using JB Weld.

I have a 58 Del Ray with the 235 6 cylinder. How do I service the air filter on it? It looks like a commercial truck style that I have seen before. I'm only 32, so I haven't relied on this type of system before. Thanks for the help.

There are two types of air filters used on the 58 235 engine. The standard filter has a metal mesh that is visable from the out side of the filter. It is on the bottomof the front of the filter just behind the radiator. The mesh is cleaned out by dipping it in a solvent. Then after it drips dry it is dipped in oil to coat the mesh and that is what catches the chunks. If you have an oil bath air cleaner the bottom of it will come off. There you will find a fiber or metal mesh filter which is washed clean by the oil in the lower part of the filter. This oil and the dust under it should be cleaaned out and refilled with #50 oil. If the mesh is dirty due to lack of oil it may also be cleaned with a solvent.Mineral sprits is what I use for a solvent. You should watch for a shop and owners manual for your 58,it can be a real help.
