Rebuilt engine with 5K miles. Pushing oil out around the dist. I know there is no seal so why the leak? Also I notice when I change the oil and put in 5 qts the dip stick shows 1/2 qt low. If I add a 1/2 qt to bring it up to full do I have to much oil so it leaks out at Dist.? Thanks

Check your crankcase breather for blockage and also verify that the dipstick is correct for your engine. What is the history prior to rebuild?

!/2 extra qt. would not cause the leak.
From the 1938 Service News.
Ignition Distributor oil leaks.
When cases are encountered of oil coming up the ign. distributor shaft, the following correction should be made
1-Remove distributor and enlarge the 5/32" oil drain hole in the lower grove in the housing to 5/16"
2-Remove excessive grease on the relieved portion of the shaft and the figure "8" oil grove.

Gene, that fix sounds like oil coming up the shaft into the dist. My leak is where the dist goes into the block ?

What Gene is saying is look to make sure the hole that the oil returns down into the crank case is not plugged up.

Remove the dist. and look in the hole to see if there is something around the hole like a part of a gasket. Also, Check the dist to see if any crud is on the part that seats in the engine.

With the oil at it's present level use a peace of slim board to check the oil level through the dist. hole. If you can not see it. He is right about the dip stick. But I can also say that if you have a leaky fuel pump diaphragm, gas will flow into the crank case and raise the oil level making it leak out around the dist.
