My harmonic balancer is a mass of rust. I would like to put it in the molasses tank for a month, which will clean it right up. My idea is that the molasses attacks and removes rust but should not hurt the metal in the internal springs. After a good soak in water I would then soak it in penetrating oil before reinstalling it. Does this seem like a good idea?

Regarding questions on your 1932, you would probably get a better response if you post in the 1929-1932 forum as you did previously.

Irregardless of where it is posted, soaking in dilute acetic acid (generated by bacteria from the molasses sugar) should not harm the base metal of the balancer or the internal springs. After the soaking it may be necessary to clean up (or smooth out) the pulley groove if it is pitted. Pits in a pulley can eat up a rubber belt.

After smoothing out any rough edges etc. and soaking in your oil, you should be good to go.
