What was the year range of usage of the clutch head screw and were they used on vehicles other than Chevy. Just curious.

My 41 has clutch screws on the air cleaner for the vacuum assist. The screws attach the air cleaner to the frame.

Thanks, Mike

One of my 47s has them on the baffle between radiator and grille and the other 47 has slot headed (what I call pan screws) at the same location.

The earliest I have seen clutch head screws is to attach the ID plates on a 1931 1 1/2 ton chassis with fire apparatus. Can not be 100% sure they were placed there at assembly as the fire apparatus was installed by a specialty company. Also don't know why the specialty company would have removed the screws as the plates were not in the way for them to do their work.

They were used up through '62 for limited applications.

Thanks for the information. I have a 1947 that uses them in various places and was just wondering how long they used them.

I restored a 1964 Buick Electra, and clutch heads were used inside the steering column to attach turn signal and horn switches and components.

Are clutch heads used to fasten the access plate to the firewall on '51-'52 Chev's - the plate that has the voltage regulator attached to it?

kaygee,

I can not help on that one. Better to post it under the 51 forum.

My '51 is too far away to look to be sure. I do remember a number of years in the 50s and early 60s did have the voltage regulators attached with clutch head screws.

Yes, clutch head screws were used on the access plate to the firewall on the 1951 Chevrolet. My '51 Chevy has the clutch head screws on the access plate.

I remember that my '53 has clutch head screws for the transmission cover in the floor. That was in the mid-60's and I wondered what the heck were those crazy screw heads. So I found a straight bladed screwdriver that fit the diagonal close enough to remove and re-install them!

Those clutch head screws in the interior were the first to go on my 37 but thinking about putting them back in now that I have the tools to do it.

I remember seeing them attaching the rear fenders on stepside pickups in the 60s. Does anyone know how long they were used there?

Once heard an interesting story about clutch head screws, Seems that when the engineers were road testing the soon-to-be Corvair trucks during a test something happened in the engine compartment (probably a fan belt) and the engineer could not get the heavy engine cover off with the clutch head screws. As soon as he got back they were all changed to slotted screws in production. Not sure if this is true or not might be an urban legend. Ed VCCA#47508 Dade City,Fl
