Ok, I did it and pulled the trigger guys. I'm a new VCCA member and just gave a deposit on this truck.

Looks good. What engine is in it? I assume he has the gas tank in the bed. Did he tell you why? Engine is a question, seller told me it was upgraded to a newer engine and MarkY mentioned it was a 235 or 261, I'm not exactly sure how he can tell, but you might. Or maybe not as the picture of the engine is posted above... Alan

Alan,
What are your plans for the body? It looks like my 36 PU looked when I first got it in 1965. I learned body work in night school in the early 1970s and straightened the body myself (hammer and dolly only, no bondo). So if your interested in my observations on the body photos I'd be glad to share them with you. If you're interested in what a highly motivated amateur can accomplish with old school body tools, a small Binks spray gun and a Sears 1 HP compressor I'm just up the road from you in Sonoma County.

Alan,
I respectively suggest that you NOT fix any dings or try to redo old welds (unless it is a safety issue). At least for a while.
They all help tell the truck's history. If you're not careful, fixing stuff can lead to the slippery slope of restoration! ;-)

I am in need of a set of '46 California license plates. How much should I expect to pay for a pair on ebay? Do i need commercial plates for a 1/2 ton truck?

If you don't mind I'd prefer to share my thoughts by email rather than on this forum. I have the same shop tools as you do and probably the same views of doing stuff ourselves rather than writing a bunch of checks to have stuff done by "professionals" which is the dominant view on this forum. You'll see constant references to "my engine rebuilder", "my body shop" etc.
In the photos of your '46 I see what my '36 looked like when I got it in 1965. It was complete, running and rough. I'll send you a photo of what the 40+ year old restoration looks like today. Dean is right about the "slippery slope of restoration". I slid down it over 40 years ago and have no regrets. There is nothing like driving your truck to a national meet (1976 VCCA in my case) and taking home the prize in your class with a truck you restored in your home shop beating all the mega dollar "professional" restorations brought in enclosed trailers towed by motor homes.

Brino You are right about the "done it myself" feeling. At this stage the only work on my 38 that I didnt do is the engine machining and conrod babbiting and at the moment I am in the process of a total rewire.

I would have to say it seems to me the regular posters on this site try to do what they can themselves and many do almost everything. It won't hurt to keep posting your questions here and get a variety of opinions.

This is one of the few forums where people actually do most of their own work unless it's specialized like engine machining or final body painting. There are members who have had many birthdays still pulling out engines, rebuilding carbs and lifting bodies on a daily basis here.
Really don't recall anyone just sending out a vehicle and writing cheques...

I think it's important to know your abilities and talents as well as the limits of your wallet. When I win the megamillions $1.6 billion I doubt I will be doing all my own work. If one enjoys doing all their own work that's great but if they lack talent and ability and can afford to pay someone else to do the work it helps the person hired . Most Chevy people I know are the hands on type. There is not a big market in Chevrolet for the investor types other than perhaps then Corvette and muscle car fans and not a lot of those guys seem to be hanging around here.
