I bought a rebuilt 1936 engine from a street rodder. It has a Carter YF carb #6-1658 and I-630. Was this a modern replacement or from a later year Chev?

Yes. After the W-1 died and Chevrolet went to their Rochester the YF was sold by
Carter for a modern replacement.

The numbers posted are for raised "casting numbers", and pretty much worthless in attempting to exactly identify the carburetor.

STAMPED (not raised, but recessed) numbers should appear on the center section of the carburetor. These will be either in the format nnnl(l) or nnnnl(l) where n represents numbers and l represents letters.

A common replacement YF for the early Chevy six's is 964s

Really a GREAT carb for a driver; of course, you would lose points at a points judged car show wink

The only downside to the carb is the neopreme diaphragm pump. Try to start the engine sufficiently often that the bowl does not completely dry of fuel. Allowing the bowl to completely dry can cause the neopreme to turn hard if you use ethanol fuel. Once it turns hard, the next step is cracking and failure. Keep it wet, and it will be OK.

Of course, should you ignore that advice, I know where you can get rebuilding kits with new diaphragms. wink
