I am slowly trying to seal up the few leaks I have on my '51 Style Line Deluxe, manual transmission car. I have successfully dealt with valve cover and rear differential leaks. The next project (for the winter) will be the torque tube. There is fluid seeping past the u-joint area. I have found that there was a seal (packing) available from GM back in the day- part #595885 Felt, oil seal as described in the 1929-54 P&A catalog. Of course this has been discontinued long ago. Where can I find just this seal and not a whole kit? I have looked at the usual vendors and their catalogs don't list this separately. How have you all dealt with this leak? Any help would be appreciated. Jeff

The original seal you described was stiff felt with a rubberized coating. When compressed it worked very well. The reproduction stuff sold today is more like cork and difficult to compress and seal. This is the seal at the very rear of the U joint ball. The big packing nut at the end of the ball can be tightened compressing the present seal more to stop the leak.

In addition to the seal in the rear there is a cork seal under the retainer for the ball. This is also shimmed with gaskets to set the tension on the ball seal. Not sure when you state the "u-joint area" if this is where the leak is. I would suggest while doing the repair to do both ends of the torque tube ball housing.

When I installed the engine and transmission in my driver 41 coupe, I didn't have a good cork in he end seal cup, the one you tighten up to help the gasket to seal up against the torque tube. Solution, I went to the local Caterpillar dealer. They had a bunch of "O" rings hanging on the wall. I found one that would fit and bought it. Haven't had any trouble with a leak in that ares.
Such an O-ring may work for you.
Best,

Thank you all for your responses. I have read/seen on UTube about the O-ring fix and that may be the route I take. I will open this up when the car is put away for the winter and I will know more about what is there and the condition. Jeff
