Can anyone give me a description or a source for how the clock works. Mine appears to be in good condition and I believe it was previously restored but it doesn't run. I would like to remove it and run some test to see why it doesn't run but I don't really know what to test or how. Also are there any reliable sources out there that do repairs? Does the ignition have to be on for it to operate? I would think it should run all of the time that the battery is connected.

You have to be more specific as to what type of clock that you have before we can give you any answers. Electric, windup, genuine Chevrolet accessory clock, aftermarket?? A photo would help as well.
Your right my apology, it is a genuine Chevrolet electric clock. It has a hot wire on the back that is fused and an adjustment knob on the back. The fuse is good and the wire goes to the ignition switch which is a correct pop out. I hope this helps.

The electric clock runs when an electromagnet is energized by closing a set of points. That pulls a lever that winds the main spring and opens the points. When the main spring returns to the starting position the points again close and the cycle repeats. Generally lubrication of the wheels and gears is needed. A good clock oil is needed. Occasionally the points need to be cleaned. If more is needed watch repair technicians can do the job.
Thank you chipper, I didn't want to take it apart without some knowledge of what might be needed. It sounds similar to my 64 Corvette clock. Thanks again.

I just finished repairing my genuine Chevrolet electric clock today after I was told a few years ago from a professional (non-VCCA) that it could not be fixed. I even eliminated the arcing across the contact points. It runs almost as well as the Carter W-1 569S carburetor that Chipper set up for me years ago.
Now if I can only remember where I stashed my Service News bulletins that tell where where on the dash to put it.
It used to be in the TECHNICAL INFO section of the member data. You might check there. But I also found that a lot of data didn't get transferred to the new member web site. If you don't find it, let me know. I probably have a copy of it somewhere.

Most of the clocks I have seen are meant to go in a rear view mirror. My 35 coupe has one as does my 35 phaeton. I have the STEM WIND TYPE as opposed to the also available electric ones.
Apparently, I had this conversation about mounting location of the electric dash clock in November 08, 2011 22:09 in thread #224086. JYD told me them where the dash clock needs to go.
Interesting mounting location way over to the right of the dash board. Makes more sense to mount it more closer to the center, but there again a lot of stuff Chevrolet did made you shake your head in a " what were they thinking " .
