Has any of the membership here ever located a 6Volt Delco battery that fits the original battery box on a 29 chevy? If so could you share the vendor that you bought from.

A 1929 Chevrolet uses the same group 1 battery that all 1929-1954 Chevrolets except the 1937-1939 models where the original size battery is not made and a group 1 is sustituted. Available in many brands.
In 1929 Chevrolet did not use a Delco battery, they had not been "invented" at that time. It would be either an Exide or "Chevrolet" battery.

As Gene mentioned, a standard Group 1 battery fits the 1929-32 battery box. I purchased a 6 volt battery for my 1932 at Bi-Mart. Also, originally a battery clamp wood spacer was used between the side of the battery and the battery box bracket. With the Group 1 battery sold today you will need two battery clamp wood spacers, one on each side of the battery.

The wood spacers are long enough so that the two long carriage bolts (a long carriage bolt in front of the battery and a long carriage bolt behind the battery) will go thru them to hold the spacers in place. The thickness of each spacer depends upon the width of the battery that you purchase. Also, there are holes drilled in each spacer to allow for clearance on the bracket rivets.

TFS has an online picture which will help with the design. Just type in battery and it will come up along with cables etc.

A helpful longtime restorer gave me an original spacer that I was able to copy. I can trace it out and mail the pattern if someone is interested. the wood I found at home depot was just slightly too small width wise. The top and bottom edges are beveled.

I also think someone on this site was making these but I don't remember who.

Send me a pm with your address if you want a pattern.

Dave

Thanks for the return gentlemen. I eventually bought just a 6 volt battery from NAPA. Any Delco distributor I spoke with could not supply a delco to fit my battery box.

Delco batteries were my battery of choice for a whole lot of years because they're REALLY good batteries.
After they priced themselves out of my league I was buying Carquest batteries which are made in Pennsylvania.
Then they got pretty salty too so now I'm buying from Batteries Plus Bulbs with excellent results........so far.
Every now and then Batteries + has a $10 off "coupon" for online orders only.......I take advantage of that.

I found Delco 6 volt batteries to be inferior for my 1932 Chevrolet because of their low CCA. The last one that I purchased only had 450 CCA. Finding 6 volt Delco batteries around this area is very difficult. I now get my 625 CCA generic brand batteries at Bi-Mart since they have them on the shelf ready to go.

I have been using Delco group 1 batteries for over 45 years and have been well satisfied. The manufacturers of their batteries have changed through the years and the current offering of group 1 is part number 1HD6V, has 640 cca at 0 degrees and 800 ca at 32 degrees f . I have them in a 24, 31, 39, and a 31 Buick and have had no fitment or cranking problems.

The key is getting a fresh battery of any manufacture. These do not turn in inventory very fast and you can get old one right off the shelf. They are perishable like apples.

They do offer a group 2, part number 417A. That wouldn't fit when I tried them.
